Arthritis
Arthritis
is a condition that affects nearly all creatures who live long lives.
Unfortunately, it can also plague those who have suffered injuries.
The following suggestions are not in any way intended to take the place
of veterinary advice. If your dog suffers from arthritis, it is
important that you discuss any treatment with your veterinarian. Some
dogs do not show any improvement at all with these supplements; others
show fast, remarkable improvement - your dog may be one that does not
benefit from a supplement that another dog owner swears by.
Inclusion of
the following information on this page is not a personal endorsement by
MTBR or its administrators. We make no claims as to the effectiveness
of any treatment listed below.Following any of these suggestions
without the advice of your veterinarian may be detrimental to the
health of your dog.
Vitamin C
Many dog owners claim that a daily dose of Vitamin C (ascorbic
acid) can help prevent arthritis. Dosage is recommended between
1500-3000
mg. per day for an adult boxer. Vitamin C supplementation can also
greatly improve the condition of a dog already suffering from
arthritis. There is a product called Ester-C that is supposed to be
gentler on the stomach than plain ascorbic acid. Read this
article for more information about Vitamin C and arthritis and hip
dysplasia.
Glucosamine, Chondroitin, MSM
There are
combinations of these supplements that have been shown to be quite
effective in treating arthritis in both animals and humans.
"Joint Care
Plus" - A combination of Glucosamine, Chondroitin, MSM and Vitamin C.
Available through
Drs. Foster and Smith catalog.
"Cosequin" - A combination of Glucosamine and Chondroitin only.
Available through your veterinarian
and through pet product catalogs. Probably less effective than
"Joint Care Plus," or a
similar regimen that includes MSM and Vitamin C. It can also be
fairly expensive.
"K-9 Liquid Health" - A combination of Glucosamine, Chondroitin, MSM
and manganese. Available
through J&B
Pet Supply or at PetSmart or other pet stores. Combined with
Ester-C pills,
it
can be quite effective.
There are also products that can help you help your arthritic dog.
